How Thai Shops Can Accept Alipay and WeChat Pay with a Thai QR
Thai shops can take payments from visitors using Alipay, WeChat Pay or UnionPay through a merchant Thai QR code issued by a participating bank: the Bank of Thailand launched the Thailand–China cross-border QR payment linkage on 30 October 2025. Apply for a merchant QR with your bank (not a PromptPay QR you generate from a phone number), confirm with the bank that your QR is enabled, then print a sign that tells visitors in Thai, English and Chinese.
What the Bank of Thailand announced
On 30 October 2025 the Bank of Thailand launched a cross-border QR payment linkage between Thai banks and three Chinese payment providers: Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay (including the UnionPay app and Chinese bank apps on UnionPay). Users from China can scan Thai merchants displaying Thai QR Codes issued by the participating banks.
Banks taking part at launch: Bangkok Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Thai), Kasikornbank, Krungthai Bank, Siam Commercial Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives (BAAC). Bank of Ayudhya, Government Savings Bank, HSBC and TMBThanachart were listed as coming soon. Bangkok Bank and Krungthai Bank are the cross-border settlement banks.
Visitors from other countries: “Pay Like a Local”
TAT News (26 June 2026) says “Pay Like a Local” is available to users from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, South Korea, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Hong Kong, using banking apps or e-wallets from home, with eight Thai banks: Krungthai, Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, ICBC Thai, BAAC and CIMB Thai. Merchants register for QR merchant services with partner banks. Lists of banks and countries change, so your bank’s answer is what counts.
How to start accepting tourist payments
- 1
Apply for a merchant QR with a participating bank
Ask at a branch or in your bank’s merchant app for a merchant payment QR (a merchant Thai QR), not a personal PromptPay QR made from your phone number.
- 2
Ask your bank whether your QR accepts Alipay / WeChat Pay / UnionPay
It isn’t written in the QR itself, so you can’t check it yourself. Ask clearly, and ask about fees, how to see these payments, and any official signage the bank provides.
- 3
Screenshot the QR in your bank app
Open your shop’s receive-money QR in the bank app and take a screenshot with the whole code sharp and in frame.
- 4
Make a tourist sign with QRLoom
Open the sign maker with the “Tourist-friendly” template, choose “Use my bank’s QR” and upload the screenshot. It is decoded on your device and printed exactly as your bank made it. Tick that your bank confirmed Alipay / WeChat Pay / UnionPay, turn on the Chinese lines, and download an A4, A5 or A6 table-tent PDF.
- 5
Test before you put it up
Print at 100% and pay from the paper with a Thai banking app. If your bank offers a way to test with a foreign wallet, do that too.
What a self-generated PromptPay QR can’t do
The Bank of Thailand’s announcement covers “Thai QR Codes issued by” the participating banks. It doesn’t say that personal PromptPay QR codes generated from a phone number or citizen ID (including ones made with QRLoom or any other QR website) accept Alipay or WeChat Pay. Don’t tell customers you take them until you have a merchant QR from your bank and the bank has confirmed it.
QRLoom doesn’t provide payment acceptance and can’t make any QR accept foreign wallets. We only print a sign around the QR your bank issued. The sign doesn’t mention Alipay, WeChat Pay or UnionPay until you confirm, and never uses their logos (they are trademarks). For logos, ask your bank for official stickers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Chinese tourists pay my phone-number PromptPay QR with Alipay?
The Bank of Thailand’s announcement says Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay users can scan Thai QR Codes issued by participating banks. It doesn’t cover personal PromptPay QR codes generated from a phone number. To accept Chinese tourists, apply for a merchant QR with your bank and ask the bank to confirm it is enabled.
Which Thai banks take part?
Per the Bank of Thailand (30 October 2025), at launch: Bangkok Bank, ICBC (Thai), Kasikornbank, Krungthai Bank, Siam Commercial Bank and BAAC, with Bank of Ayudhya, Government Savings Bank, HSBC and TMBThanachart coming soon. The list can change, so confirm with your bank.
Can QRLoom make my QR accept Alipay?
No. Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay acceptance is switched on by your bank through its merchant QR. QRLoom prints a Thai / English / Chinese sign around that QR without changing it.
Does the QRLoom sign change my bank’s QR?
No. Your screenshot is decoded on your device, checked as a valid Thai QR (including its CRC checksum), and printed character for character. Money goes straight to your account and never passes through QRLoom.
Can I put Alipay or WeChat Pay logos on the sign?
QRLoom doesn’t print other brands’ logos because they are trademarks. The sign names the wallets in plain text once you confirm your bank enabled them. For logos, ask your bank for official stickers or signage.
Can visitors from other countries pay too?
TAT News (26 June 2026) says “Pay Like a Local” works for users from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, South Korea, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Hong Kong with their home apps, at merchants using a partner bank’s merchant QR. Ask your bank which countries your QR supports.
